2008 The Year In Pictures
2008 started off with a good dose of drama….
After an hour long boycott to protest managers not getting an appearance fee for the trip to Japan, the Red Sox finally took the field for their final Spring Training game. The game was televised on ESPN giving the Sox players the stage they needed to convince MLB to do the right thing.
The World Champs open their 2008 season in Japan with local legend Daisuke Matsuzaka on the mound in front of 44,268 fans in the Tokyo Dome.
The Red Sox home opener where the 2007 World Series Championship flag was unfurled. The wind however, wasn’t cooperating. Raising the new banner up and down, it appeared to want the 2004 flag to have one last day in the sun before the new title could take it’s place.
Joining Red Sox legends Bobby Doerr, Joe Cronin, Carl Yastrzemski, Ted Williams and Carlton Fisk, Johnny Pesky has his number 6 retired for all time.
For the second season in a row, a Red Sox pitcher delivers a no-hitter. In 2007, it was Clay Buchholz. In 2008, it was the emergence of a future Ace that did it…..On May 19th, Jon Lester threw the 18th no-hitter in Red Sox history against the Kansas City Royals.
What’s there to say? Coco got ticked, but the Rays took off.
On July 28th, Manny looks over at a fan’s sign as he steps into the batters box to face Los Angeles Angels starter Jered Weaver. 3 days later, he was gone.
On September 23rd, the Red Sox defeat the Cleveland Indians and clinch the Wild Card and another Post Season berth.
A walk off win over the Los Angeles Angels in game 4 of the ALDS.
Down to their last 7 outs, trying to stave off elimination and trailing 7-0 in game 5 of the ALCS, the Red Sox pull off one of the most dramatic comebacks in postseason history. Beating the Tampa Bay Rays 8-7 with a JD Drew walkoff single. WHAT A GAME!!!
Dustin Pedroia and Coco Crisp watch as the Rays celebrate a 3-1 victory in game 7 of the ALCS.
The 2008 Red Sox…. A great team, a great season and one tough loss.
Bring on 2009!
We have a score to settle!!
